I am very excited to welcome Reiki Master and Energy Healer, Monica Foran to explain in her own words what Reiki is and how it can help improve your life.


What is Reiki?

Reiki is a popular and beneficial healing modality that is utilized for health and wellness. It is based on energetic principles and is practiced in many hospitals, medical settings, and private practice all around. Although Reiki has traditionally been used as a healing system, it is also extremely effective as a way to help individuals increase awareness, insight, wisdom and personal growth. Contentment, relaxation, decreased feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety as well as a reduction and in some cases elimination of physical illnesses and persistent conditions are common observations from clients after a Reiki session.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands on or just above a client’s body. The practitioner conducts universal energy from their arms, and out through their hands where it flows into the client’s body.

In a Reiki session the practitioner does not rely on their own personal energy, rather they are conduits for focusing the energy from the world around them. We are born with the innate intelligence of Reiki and it illuminates our body-mind, stimulating balance and growth. Over time, however, habits and beliefs that do not serve our highest good can stifle that flow of energy resulting in a loss of vitality and eventually imbalance.

In a Reiki session, the energy drawn in by the recipient is done so through the practitioner’s hands. The energy will go where it is needed and in the order that the recipient’s body-mind determines. Once the body has chosen what it is ready to address, it can systematically release the stored energy at a cellular level connected with the imbalance. The cells then begin functioning as intended and the healing occurs on an emotional, mental and physical level. With the body vibrating at a more natural state, harmony and peace on all levels can be restored.

Our bodies are energetic in nature. Our bones resonate at lower frequencies while our blood, thoughts etc. vibrate at higher frequencies. This magnetic pulse is known as a bio magnetic field. In Eastern traditions, this pulse is also known as Ki or Prana. When a practitioner is performing a healing session, the energy that emanates from their hands produce a significantly larger bio magnetic reading (7-10Hz – Theta and Alpha range) than a non-practitioner. These frequencies are associated with physical healing.


Reiki is a pleasant and effective tool to aid with stress reduction and relaxation. When the body and mind are relaxed, the body can work to repair and heal and the mind may function with more clarity. Thus, Reiki may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing. There are many conditions that Reiki may help with. Reiki is a great tool to use as a compliment to traditional medicine as part of a wellness plan.


As Reiki energies flow between the practitioner and the recipient during the Reiki session, the sensations are nearly always pleasant. You may feel heat, warmth, cold, subtleness, pins-and-needles, hot flashes, goose bumps, chills, throbbing, etc. As your body processes the energy you may start to yawn, very commonly your tummy may start to gurgle and rumble. You may feel a peace and calm in your mind or physically in general. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt. The fact that you can feel Reiki flowing is verification that the energy is being welcomed.


Reiki sensations can be very subtle and may be overlooked, but with continued practice, most people will begin to notice even the slightest shifts of energy. Fortunately, Reiki works whether you feel it or not.


No, Reiki isn’t a religion. However, its energy arrives from the highest spiritual source.

Reiki links to a Japanese lay monk named Mikao Usui. On a lifelong spiritual quest, he lived in an environment where Shinto, Taoist, and Buddhist beliefs co-existed. Reiki is usually associated with healing. Many practitioners of Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Shintoism, and Buddhism embrace it for spiritual healing. Both Reiki and spirituality focus on self-care. One way to think of Reiki is a spiritual practice that complements any particular faith to promote physical and emotional healing.


A Reiki practitioner directs and offers universal energy from a subject’s head to toes with specific traditional hand positions. The experience can include relaxing releases of energy. Many people describe this as similar to spiritual meditation. The most common feelings are health, peacefulness, calm, tingling, and coolness.
Just as a person’s spirituality develops over time, so does an understanding in Reiki’s ability to heal. While it’s not necessary to believe in Reiki for it to work, being open to its possibilities is helpful.
One of the most important Reiki benefits is the adjunct capability to guide a person’s life in a manner exactly right for him or her. Reiki’s spiritual nature can help people handle difficult life experiences and change attitudes or beliefs about circumstances. Each person has a customized life plan. Reiki leads individuals to find this plan—really a person’s true spiritual path—and follow it. Experienced Reiki practitioners are able to send distance treatments without using any hands. Some see a parallel between this and sending prayers on a person’s behalf.


How long is a Reiki session?

A session is generally one hour. 90-minute sessions may be available in some cases.

Will I be lying down on a massage table or sitting?

Reiki is usually performed on a client who is fully reclined comfortably on a massage table. It also may be performed on a client who is semi-reclined on a massage chair or recliner. If you have mobility or pain issues please communicate these to your Practitioner so they may make you your most comfortable for the session.

Am I clothed during my Reiki session?

Yes. Unlike a massage therapy session, you will be fully clothed. Unless, of course, your Reiki Practitioner is also a licensed Massage Therapist and you are receiving both massage and Reiki, then you would speak with your practitioner about your preference. But for a Reiki session only, you will want to wear loose fitting comfortable clothing.

Will the Reiki practitioner’s hands touch me in any way?

At your option. Reiki may be done with a light gentle pressure static touch or the Practitioner’s hands may be a few inches/centimeters above your body at the hand positions with no actual touch. There are standard hand placements beginning at your head or feet, avoiding all sensitive body parts. Let your Practitioner know prior to the session which you prefer, light touch or no touch.

Is one session enough or will I need a series of sessions?

One session is a great start! You will see for yourself how Reiki makes you feel, if it is relaxing, if you feel more clarity after the session. Many people, after trying one session, go on to purchase a series of sessions to progressively work on their current wellness goals.

Is there talking during the session?

Usually, a session is done without talking and the practitioner may have soft ambient music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation. If you want to communicate something to your practitioner during the session, such as if you are cold or too warm, if you would like them to adjust the music, if you are feeling a sensation you would like to discuss, if something feels uncomfortable for you, if you have a question or issue, then do speak up at any time during the session. Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. Also, your practitioner may ask you after the session if there is anything you would like to share and you may do so at your option. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.

Can you have too much Reiki?

No, Reiki is beneficial and works with your body’s energy. In fact, your own energetic body is in control of how much Reiki it wants and needs during the session and utilizes it accordingly. Like breathing, you will comfortably take in as much as you need to support you.

Be gentle with yourself. This means that if you need to rest, rest. If you need to be
around those you love and who bring you joy – do so. If you need to be alone, honor
Stay hydrated. Water helps your cells function. This includes helping them release the
storage they have that are impairing their function. Everyone is different with regard
to the amount of water they need to be healthy so listen to your body’s cues.
Eat Healthy. Your body’s energy system may be moving at a more optimum rate, so please care for yourself with water and healthy food during the day.
Breathe. We process our emotions through our diaphragm and when energy comes
up to be released, we need to make sure we are consciously breathing.
Surrender. Try to trust and surrender to the release of the symptoms you are
experiencing. Remember that this is your body healing itself.
Meditate. The energy that your body is choosing to highlight and release needs to be
processed by you consciously. The belief that is not serving you needs to be
neutralized. The emotions you have been storing need to be acknowledged and
transmuted. Meditation will help you be present during this time to ensure you heal.
